This year many have had to adapt their spaces to work from home, either in a separate room or within other larger spaces such as the living room.
In this article, we will explain what you should take into account to plan the lighting of your home office and optimize your space to work or study in good conditions.
How much light should I have?
The best way to determine the right lighting level will be the European standard DIN EN 12464-1 for indoor workplaces. It contains, among others, the following recommendations:
Working area: 500 lux.
Surrounding area: 300 lux.
Corridors/other: 100 lux.
As the office is a space for teleworking or studying we will take as reference the first two points.
The first thing we must take into account is the location of the different elements and accessories that our workplace will have (table, shelves, computer).
We will try that the distribution of these elements allows us to take advantage of the natural light, if there is any, and gives us the maximum level of comfort and ergonomics.

What color temperature should be used?
As we know the color temperature (CCT) is a parameter that defines the tone of light, from warm (more yellow) to cold (bluer).
In general, it is advisable to use lights whose CCT is above 4000K, although
Our recommendation is to use lights that provide a colder light, which would mean a temperature above 5500K.
This is because the blue part of the spectrum helps us to stay active and focused. In addition, above a certain lighting level, cold light is more pleasant than warm light.
The general strategy whenever we face lighting planning is to light in layers (general light, work light, accent light). In this case, we will pay special attention to the use of indirect light, the correct use of natural light, and to have adequate working light.
Taking advantage of natural light is beneficial in the lighting of any room and our domestic work area is no exception. With regard to the directions of light, it is always better than the light reaches the table from the side to avoid shadows or that it is too annoying.
