Lack of space on your balcony prevents you from growing fresh herbs? Here’s the solution that’s too pretty, and made of recycled material: a garden made of wooden pallets!
Materials needed to build a garden with wooden pallets
- 2 wooden pallets (1 intact and 1 to be used for the boards)
- about 20 nails 2 ½ in. or longer
- a hammer
- a saw
- a stitching machine
- a drill* (only necessary if you have a very massive pallet)
- scraps of 100% cotton/hemp fabric or a roll of groundcover
- a bag of soil
- plants/fines herbs

Method
First, make sure the pallet you have is solid and in good condition.
You can always add a few boards from the second pallet to solidify the structure of the first one.
The top, center, and bottom of the pallet where there are 2 planks facing each other will serve as flower boxes.
You must therefore create a base by nailing a plank under each of these parts.
Then, staple the fabric (or ground cover) into the bins to prevent the soil from falling into the cracks.
If you are in an apartment and you cannot make a permanent installation, I suggest you use the old technique of square bracing to fix the pallet to the patio railing with rope.
Fill with soil, plant your favorite herbs or flowers, and enjoy the summer!
